The mission of Georgetown Athletics is to support the comprehensive development of student potential, in the Jesuit tradition of education, by providing opportunities for students to excel athletically and academically at the highest level, with the deliberate objective of furthering the formation of character and of fostering future leaders of society.
Student-athletes are integral in shaping elements of the University community. As athletes, they are students first, intent upon graduating and leading productive lives of purpose.
Georgetown continues to fulfill this mission with a long list of student athletes who, after graduation, have distinguished themselves in all of the major fields for which the University is known. Athletically, Hoya varsity teams have produced more than 500 All-Americans along with thousands of conference and academic accolades.
Approximately 700 Georgetown student-athletes – ten percent of the undergraduate student body – participate in a 29-sport program: 15 sports for women (basketball, crew, field hockey, golf, lacrosse, soccer, tennis, track, volleyball, softball, swimming and sailing) and 14 programs for men (baseball, basketball, crew, football, golf, lacrosse, soccer, tennis, track, swimming, and sailing). Georgetown is a founding member of the Big East Conference.
By affording ten percent of the student body the opportunity to participate in intercollegiate athletics, the program has a significant impact on the entire undergraduate experience. Athletic competition ignites a sense of institutional pride and spirit.
Intercollegiate competition brings the University community together. In the common cause of athletics, in victory or defeat, one unifying theme emerges: we are one, we are Georgetown.
